Swing Style

In In The Pages on January 6, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Yesterday was claimed “Art Day.” AKA–3 UESiders decided to challenge themselves to not take any taxis for the day and explore different exhibitions around the city.

One of them, where we conveniently started off, was Ann Hamilton’s “The Event Of A Thread” exhibit at the Park Avenue Armory.

When I heard I was going to this exhibit, I didn’t know much, other than I saw multiple photos of this large curtain on many Instagram accounts of which I follow.

But when I arrived, there were at least 100 people wrapped around the Armory waiting to get in, and once we were finally let in, there were hundreds of people in this giant space with oversized swings connected to wires in all directions, big enough to fit three adults, and the white curtain stood with people lying underneath.

get-attachment-1.aspxI had never felt more confused in my entire life. The only similar situation that I could think of was Episode 12, Season 6 of Sex and the City, when Carrie and Charlotte went to an exhibit at an art gallery and Carrie had an unexpected rendevous in the exotic world of art with big shot “Alexander Petrovsky.”

While I can’t relate on the romantic level, I can relate to the level of confusion Carrie experienced at the exhibit–absolutely clueless.

But even though I had no idea what was going on, I somehow felt a part of something so unique, strange and rather significant at the same time, so much so that I didn’t walk out in a hurry, but I actually took a shot at the swing, and joined in with the experience.

This NY Time’s article will give you more on the 411.

The September Issues

In In The Pages on August 17, 2012 at 12:00 AM

It’s the greatest time of year…for fashion magazines! The September Issues are out on the newsstands, and fashionistas alike are ecstatic–I certainly am. They are the most anticipated issues of the year, giving us the total breakdown of what’s haute for fall. Above are my favorite covers of the year, but if I had to pick just one, I’d say Gwen Stefani on Bazaar. She looks so chic in the rosy hues–very Parisian, classic, and elegant. No worries Bazaar, we’re definitely thinking pink.

Which magazine above is your favorite September Issue?

This Week’s Fashion News

In In The Pages on January 6, 2012 at 5:24 PM

I’m so happy that it’s Friday; I’ve never wanted the weekend to come more. Although this was a short week, it felt long and I’m already craving some relaxation. While I’ll be able to somewhat “stop” this weekend, the world of fashion never does. There’s always a new product, a new trend, a new celebrity endorsement, and so on.

Below are two of my favorite fashion news this week.

1. Dior signs Mila Kunis: Shot by Mikael Jansson, Mila Kunis is the face of the upcoming Dior campaign that will be in international magazines next month. This fashion label seems to love Black Swan stars; Natalie Portman is the current face of the Miss Dior Cherie fragrance campaign.

2. Brad Goreski has a Brad, Brad World! Former stylist with Rachel Zoe, this fashionista is now on his own as an independent stylist and has his own reality show on Bravo. He also just landed a deal with Kate Spade as the exclusive brand stylist. Congrats!

I’m going to Beauty & Essex this evening for dinner, one of my favorite restaurants. I’m excited for the food and the cabinets full of jewelry that I love to browse while waiting for my table.

A warm outfit is definitely needed, with wintery accessories and all.

Enjoy your Friday night!

Miss Piggy Lands A Spread In “InStyle”

In In The Pages on October 23, 2011 at 9:41 AM

My weekend consisted of lots of traveling, mostly by train.  I’ve had quite some time to indulge in the pages of the new November issues.  InStyle is my favorite fashion magazine, so there was no doubt in picking that up at the newsstand first.  The cover is absolutely stunning–Gwen Stefani with tons of Lorraine Schwartz bedazzled arm candy.  As I read, I eventually came across a familiar face, one that I was obsessed with as a child: Miss Piggy; the fashionista.  From wearing Prabal to Jason Wu to Brian Atwood and much more, this spread was so fresh and entertaining, and the perfect leeway into The Muppets new film.

On The Floor, To On The Runway

In Celebrities, Clothing, In The Pages on August 17, 2011 at 10:15 AM

JLO is one busy woman.  What can People’s most beautiful girl in the world not do?  JLO made her comeback this year as a judge on American Idol, and since then, her career has taken off more than ever.  If there’s one thing I didn’t expect from JLO, it would be to launch a clothing line…but she is, and I’m quite curious about what you think about it.

JLO, and her former hubby Marc Anthony (uh-oh), collaborated with Kohls to create an affordable clothing, accessories, and home line.  O Magazine readers got a sneak peak of the line in The Makeover September Issue, which Oprah graced the cover of in a beautiful gold sequin embellished gown.  JLO and O creative director Adam Glassman styled 8 O readers in her line for a spread.

I think the positive qualities of the line are its simplicity, elegance, and sophisticated vibe.  I don’t see women below their 30s being maybe quite as interested in the line as some older women may, mostly because it’s conservative and the color pallet is basic.  I do like the camel leggings with the zippers on the legs and the little fur jacket, both of which are easy pieces to have in your fall/winter wardrobe.  It’s almost like a go-to collection for your first job interview.  I think JLO’s outfit (the black romper) in the spread is the sexiest; a romper is always great with a pair of boots and a leather jacket for the colder months.

New York Magazine made a comment that I think is right on-target. “It looks like the line borrows a little from Rachel Zoe’s penchant for fur accents and Kate Middleton’s passion for sheath dresses.”  I wonder what Rachel Zoe thinks of the line.

Put it this way.  I’m not going to be running out for this line; it just doesn’t scream fresh and new for me, but props to JLO for taking on a new business venture, and always looking fabulous in everything she wears.

What do you think of JLO’s line?  Did JLO make a hit, or did she simply miss? The line will launch in September.

The September Issues

In In The Pages on August 12, 2011 at 3:32 PM

Ah, the September Issues. Can you believe it’s already that time?!  As much as I hate the thought of August coming to an end, there’s nothing like getting your eyes on those to-die-for fall fashion pages.  Which magazine are you going to be picking up first?  Kate Moss on Vogue?  Gwyneth Paltrow on Elle?  Rihanna on Glamour?  Kristen Stewart on W? SJP on Marie Claire? Jessica Alba on Allure? Freida Pinto on InStyle? Or Beyonce on Harper’s Bazaar?  Kate Moss, Kristen Stewart, SJP, and Beyonce are my favorite cover stars.  Who’s your favorite of the celebs below?

So Zoe

In Hamptons, In The Pages on August 5, 2011 at 10:49 PM

Rachel Zoe not only turns celebs into fashion icons with her impeccable styling skills, but she too is a fashion icon herself.  My admiration for Zoe started when she was a stylist for Nicole Richie.  Since then, she has turned the fashion industry upside-down, and believe me, in a good way.

Zoe stars in her reality show on Bravo, The Rachel Zoe Project, which is one of my favorite fall series because it highlights her life, and what it’s like to work in the fashion biz.  And what better timing for its fourth season to premier than the week of Spring Fashion Week?

Zoe just came out with her own line called The Rachel Zoe Collection, featuring a fabulous fur and leather jacket, a ruffled maxi gown, a collar cape jacket, flare and skinny jeans, and shift dresses; just to name a few.  I’ve already seen the collection in a few stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, and love just about every piece.

More exciting news regarding Zoe?  Yes!  Add lipstick to her long line of success; she is the brand ambassador of new lipstick brand Exude.  This is not your typical old-school looking lipstick, but one that has a clear/crystal applicator bullet to release a single-dot of elastic gel color by just twisting the tube; this leads to perfect lips.  Although cosmetic industry pros Diane Breidenbach and Laurence Mille created the technology behind the line, it was Zoe who styled the modern, sleek, and chic white tube packaging.  The color options are endless, and you can browse them all on the website.  My fave? Rosy Brown.

I just got out to the Hamptons via Jitney, and picked up my Hamptons Magazine.  There was Zoe on the cover, looking maybe not so effortlessly chic, but definitely high-end glamour girl; perfectly ok with me.  I just read her interview (questions asked by polo hottie and model Nacho Figueras) with my dinner, all grilled on the bbq (delish.), and really enjoyed it.  I especially loved looking at her different photo-shoot outfits which she styled.

Keep an eye out, because Rachel Zoe continues to shine.

Style Solutions Goes Print In The Hamptons

In Hamptons, In The Pages on July 1, 2011 at 5:48 PM

Happy July 1st Style Solutions readers!  We are officially in the second month of summer, so it’s time to kick it off fashionably.  July Fourth weekend is most popular in the Hamptons, so what better time for Style Solutions to make its first foray into print?  I’m thrilled to announce that Style Solutions has gone print for a Hampton Edition with all young-adult contributors for this fun-filled weekend.  For those of you who aren’t in the Hamptons to pick up a copy, below is my Letter From The Editor to give you a taste of what this special edition is about:

Summer is here and there’s no place as hot as the Hamptons; and it’s not just the weather.  The people are who define the East End –be it the designers, models, celebrities, beauty gurus, or moguls- and now it’s you, the young adults, who are the future of the Hamptons.  Many of you are following in your parents’ footsteps, but if you’re not, you may “wanna be”.

Style Solutions, a daily fashion and beauty blog, has come to the Hamptons for a special Fourth of July Edition with a roster of fabulous young adult contributors giving their perspective on the hottest art, beauty, fashion, music, nightlife, nutrition, and sports on the East End.

There’s mini-mogul Andrew Warren who can be spotted at the coolest parties of the summer.  Talented Missy Modell, singing from coast to coast. Art-savvy Madeline Mogul, viewing the newest art galleries.  Clio Boele, successfully competing in The Hampton Classic.  Adorable Brittany Modell, finding perfect healthy foods to enjoy at the beach.  Then there’s me, hopping from one Hampton to another, shopping in adorable boutiques like Blue & Cream and Tenet, indulging in the best food the South Fork has to offer, and looking for the summer’s hottest trends to share with my readers.

This is Style Solutions first foray into print.  Please email me, Facebook me, or Tweet me with feedback.  Thanks to the thousands of visitors to StyleSolutionsNyc.com who provide me with the inspiration to blog daily.

Style Solutions’ Blogiversary

In In The Pages on June 23, 2011 at 4:51 PM

One year ago from today, I sat on a bright yellow turned rusty lounge chair in Harvard Yard, creating what I thought was just a class project.  It turns out that Style Solutions became more than that: it became my job, and my passion.  I’m very excited to announce that today is Style Solutions’ 1 year blogiversary!

Creating Style Solutions has been a crazy door-opener for me, leading to great opportunities that I would have never expected.  I’ve sat front row at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I’ve met and interviewed a fabulous roster of celebrities, designers, stylists, and authors, I’ve attended and covered fun parties, I’ve met a community of bloggers that I adore so much, and mostly importantly, I have found myself as a writer (or should I say Blogger!).

I started out with about 5 viewers (if I was lucky).  Now, there is a much nicer number with lots of zeros at the end of it!  Last night, I spent some time reminiscing on last summer, and how much Style Solutions has evolved since I started it while taking journalism classes at Harvard University.  I’ve written over 400 posts, yet I never have a lack of things to say!

Below are 10 of my favorite blog posts from the past year that I’ve come across while reading my way through memory lane.

1. Summer Collegiate Fashion

2. Evening of Smiles Event

3. Cool Store On The Block

4. Sydney Meets Patricia Field

5. Ten Fashion New Year Resolutions

6. My First Fashion Week Experience

7.  What Sydney’s Wearing In Palm Beach

8. Citrusy Accessory

9. Sydney Interviews Shoshanna Gruss

10. Sydney Hangs Out With Natasha Bedingfield

Thank you to all of my amazing viewers who inspire me to blog daily!  I can’t wait for you to see what’s to come in the future!

After a busy morning, I decided to relax this afternoon, browsing old photos of Oprah back in the day, trendy hats, colorful boots, and the daring Lady Gaga.  It’s almost time for me to get ready for dinner with my best friends downtown.  This is one night where I don’t know what I’m going to wear yet.  Maybe colorful jeans with a simple top, a dressy short, or a tight dress?  I think it’s time for me to go play dress up in my closet!

Alexa

In In The Pages on May 4, 2011 at 5:55 PM

There are so many amazing fashion publications like Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily, plus a lot more. I read them all, and find that I learn valuable information about trends, hits, misses, and more.  On the first Wednesday of each month, I look forward to one publication in particular: Alexa, The Fashion Broadsheet from the New York Post.  On this muggy and rainy day in NYC, when fashionable rain coverage is a must (jacket, boots, umbrella), sitting in my dining room with a glass of hot chocolate and Alexa makes for the perfect afternoon.  While reading this issue, I’ve become obsessed with a few pages that show trends, color pallets, and looks off the runway: blue crush (blue clothing, blue accessories, you name it), petal pushers (bring on the florals), fringe festival (so cool), and killer mad muse shades (Gaga anyone?).  Below are pictures of my favorite pages in this month’s Alexa.
